How to Apply for the SHRM Exam: Step-by-Step Application Process
Applying for the SHRM-CP exam involves creating an SHRM account, submitting eligibility documentation, paying the exam fee, and scheduling your test through Prometric. The entire process typically takes 2–4 weeks from initial application to scheduling your exam, though SHRM's review of your eligibility documentation can vary depending on completeness and volume. Understanding each step prevents delays, rejections, and rescheduling. This guide walks you through the application process in the exact order you need to follow, flags common mistakes, and explains what to do if SHRM requests additional documentation.
Before you apply: Verify your eligibility
Before starting the application, confirm you meet SHRM-CP eligibility requirements:
- You hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution: AND you have completed one year of HR professional experience in the past five years
- OR you do not hold a bachelor's degree but have: Three years of HR professional experience in the past five years (associate degree can reduce this to two years)
- OR you are currently pursuing a bachelor's degree: You can apply before graduation but must provide proof of expected graduation before exam eligibility
"HR professional experience" means paid employment where at least 50% of job duties involve HR functions. Relevant functions include recruiting, selection, compensation, benefits, employee relations, training, HR systems, HRIS administration, payroll, labor relations, compliance, organizational development, talent management, and related work. You do not need to have worked in all these areas—just show that your work involved substantial HR responsibility.
If you are unsure whether your experience qualifies, contact SHRM directly before applying. It is better to clarify upfront than have your application rejected.
Step 1: Create your SHRM account
Go to shrm.org/certification and create an account. You will need:
- Email address
- Name (must match government-issued ID exactly—use middle initial if it appears on your ID)
- Password
- Phone number
- Mailing address
Use the same name on your SHRM account as appears on your government-issued ID. If your name on your ID is "Robert James Smith" but you go by "Rob Smith," use the full legal name on your account. This prevents ID verification issues on exam day.
Once your account is created, log in and navigate to the certification section.
Step 2: Select your credential (SHRM-CP)
SHRM offers multiple credentials: SHRM-CP (operational/professional level), SHRM-SCP (strategic level), and others. Select SHRM-CP for your certification path. If you are brand new to HR or considering SHRM-SCP instead, review eligibility requirements first. SHRM-SCP requires SHRM-CP plus three years of strategic experience, so SHRM-CP is almost always the starting credential.
Step 3: Complete your application
The application asks for:
- Personal information: Name, date of birth, email, phone address (must match your account)
- Education: Institution name, degree type, graduation date, major field of study
- HR experience: Employer name, job title, employment dates, percentage of time spent on HR duties, description of HR responsibilities
- Language preference: English or Spanish (test language)
- Accessibility accommodations (if needed): If you need exam accommodations (extended time, screen reader, etc.), note this in your application
Be detailed in your HR experience description. Do not just list job title. Explain what percentage of your time involved HR work and what specific functions you handled. Example:
"Operations Manager, ABC Company (2020–2023): 60% of duties focused on HR. Responsibilities included recruiting and onboarding (posting jobs, screening resumes, coordinating interviews, creating offer letters), employee relations (handling complaints, coaching managers, terminations), benefits administration (coordinating enrollment, answering questions, managing vendors), payroll coordination (verifying timesheets, processing corrections), and compliance (policy updates, FMLA administration, equal opportunity compliance)."
SHRM reviews these descriptions to verify that 50%+ of your work involved HR. Being specific helps them understand the breadth and depth of your experience.
Step 4: Gather and submit supporting documentation
SHRM typically requests:
Education documentation: Official transcript showing your degree and graduation date, or official letter from your institution showing expected graduation if you are currently enrolled. The transcript must come directly from your institution or via official document delivery service (Parchment, Credentials Inc., etc.). Screenshots or unofficial transcripts are not accepted.
HR experience verification: SHRM may request verification of HR experience. This can be provided through:
- Written statement from a supervisor or HR leader confirming your HR duties, percentage of time, and dates employed
- Letter from your employer on company letterhead
- Combination of W-2s or paystubs showing dates and employment, plus statement of duties
SHRM may not request documentation if your application is clear and straightforward. But have documents ready in case they ask. Respond to requests promptly—delays slow your eligibility review.
Step 5: Review and submit your application
Before submitting, review your application carefully:
- Name matches your government-issued ID exactly
- Education dates and degree are accurate
- HR experience dates add up correctly (1 year minimum with bachelor's degree, or 3 years without)
- Experience descriptions are detailed enough to show HR substance
- All required fields are completed
- Email address is correct (SHRM will contact you there)
Submit your application. You will receive an email confirmation that SHRM received your application.
Step 6: Wait for SHRM eligibility review
SHRM reviews applications and typically approves or requests additional information within 5–15 business days. You will receive an email when your eligibility is approved. The email will include:
- Confirmation of SHRM-CP eligibility
- Your eligibility window (period during which you can schedule and take the exam)
- Instructions for scheduling your exam through Prometric
- Exam details (number of questions, time limit, scoring)
If SHRM requests additional documentation, respond within 7 days if possible. Common requests include clarifying HR experience percentages, providing official transcripts, or verifying employment dates.
Step 7: Schedule your exam through Prometric
Once approved, you schedule through Prometric (the testing company SHRM uses). Visit prometric.com and search for SHRM-CP exam locations in your area.
Scheduling considerations:
- Location: Find a Prometric testing center near you. Most cities have one. Some centers are in hotels or office buildings; some are dedicated testing facilities. Check the address and parking before scheduling.
- Date and time: Book at least 2–4 weeks out if possible. This gives you time to prepare if you need it. Avoid scheduling during busy work periods or personal stress.
- Test window: Your eligibility window is typically 12 months. You can take the exam anytime during this window. Do not wait until the last week; schedule once you feel ready to avoid last-minute pressure.
- Time of day: Morning tests are often less crowded. Some people prefer morning because they are fresh; others prefer afternoon after a workout or meal to feel alert. Choose what works for your energy pattern.
Prometric registration: You will create a Prometric account (separate from your SHRM account). You will pay the exam fee through Prometric. Fees are $335 for SHRM members, $435 for non-members. Payment methods include credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal. After payment, you will receive an exam confirmation with your test date, time, location, and confirmation number.
